Outlaw legends, sandstone bluffs and a CCC-built lake make Robbers Cave State Park a great August day trip from the Wister country.
A Robbers Cave day trip from Panorama Ranch is 41 miles by road to the edge of Robbers Cave State Park in the Sans Bois Mountains, about five miles north of Wilburton on OK-2. Go early in August to scramble up to the outlaw cave while it's cool, then spend the afternoon by Lake Carlton. Bring water, good shoes and a daily state park parking pass.
Key takeaways
- Robbers Cave State Park, near Wilburton, is one of Oklahoma's "Original Seven" state parks, and its legends tie it to outlaws like Belle Starr and Jesse James (TravelOK).
- The Civilian Conservation Corps built Lake Carlton in the 1930s by damming the Fourche Maline, the same river that feeds Wister Lake.
- TravelOK lists the park swimming pool as closed for the 2026 season, though boat rentals run Thursday through Sunday through October.
- Oklahoma state parks require a daily parking pass per vehicle. Check TravelOK for current rates.
Why take a Robbers Cave day trip?
Robbers Cave has a little bit of everything: sandstone bluffs, pine woods, a lake with a spillway, and a cave with a story. The photo at the top is Patricia and me in front of the Lake Carlton spillway. It's one of those places that feels like old Oklahoma.
The outlaw legends
According to TravelOK, the rugged hills of the Sans Bois Mountains were said to hide outlaws such as the Younger brothers, the Daltons, the Rufus Buck Gang, Jesse James and Belle Starr. You can't prove who slept in that cave, but standing at the mouth looking out over the valley, it's easy to see why somebody on the run would like the spot.
CCC history
The land started out as Camp Tom Hale, a Boy Scout camp, in 1929. In 1933 the Civilian Conservation Corps arrived, and CCC Company 1825 dammed the Fourche Maline River to create Lake Carlton. The park became one of the Original Seven Oklahoma State Parks. The stonework the CCC left behind is still there to see.
A Robbers Cave day trip itinerary
Morning: the cave and the bluffs
Head out early. In August the shade and the rock stay cooler in the morning, and you'll beat the crowds. The trail to the cave climbs over sandstone, so wear shoes with grip and keep a hand on little ones. Stay on marked paths and check with the park office about current trail conditions.
Midday: lunch and Lake Carlton
Pack a picnic or eat in Wilburton (37 mi from the ranch). Find a shady table near the water, let the kids cool their feet where it is safe, and take a breather before the afternoon. Then walk down to the Lake Carlton spillway and dam, and watch the water spill over the rocks.
Afternoon: on the water or the trail
TravelOK lists boat rentals Thursday through Sunday through October. The swimming pool is closed for the 2026 season, so don't plan around it this year. The park also has hiking trails, an equestrian campground and an ATV area for anyone bringing their own machines.
Getting there
From the ranch, head west to Wilburton in Latimer County, then north on OK-2 to the park. It's 41 miles to the park boundary and about 44 to the center of the park.
