Wister, Cedar and Sardis each offer something different in summer. Here is how they compare, by road miles from Panorama Ranch and its own stocked bass pond.
The best southeast Oklahoma lakes near Panorama Ranch for summer are Wister Lake, Cedar Lake and Sardis Lake. Wister's nearest shoreline is about 4.7 miles away, Cedar Lake is 17 miles, and Sardis Lake is 38. Each one feels different: big water for boating, a quiet mountain lake for swimming, and a deep lake known for big bass. And when it's too hot to load the boat, there's a stocked bass pond right at the ranch.
Key takeaways
- Wister Lake covers 7,300 surface acres with 115 miles of shoreline (TravelOK). Lake Wister State Park has a swim beach, a spray park and cabins.
- Cedar Lake is an 86-acre mountain lake in the Ouachita National Forest with a swimming beach and a 7.5-hp motor limit (USFS).

- Swim early, fish at dawn and dusk, and save the afternoons for shade, creeks or a nap.

Wister Lake: the big water next door
Wister Lake is the closest lake to the ranch. It's a Corps of Engineers reservoir where the Poteau and Fourche Maline rivers meet. TravelOK points out that the Poteau is the only river in Oklahoma that flows north. Lake Wister State Park, 13 miles from the ranch, has a swimming beach, a spray park for little ones, a 6.4-mile hiking trail, a nature trail, boat ramps and 15 cabins. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers runs the day-use area below the dam.
Summer fishing on Wister turns to catfish and to crappie on deeper brush. ODWC's lake plan says crappie move out to 15 feet or deeper after the spring spawn. Our crappie fishing Wister Lake guide has more.
Cedar Lake: a mountain swimming hole
Cedar Lake Recreation Area is the one I'd pick for a family swim day. It's an 86-acre lake tucked into the Winding Stair Mountains in the Ouachita National Forest. The Forest Service limits motors to 7.5 horsepower, so the water stays calm and quiet. There's a swimming beach, a boat ramp, fishing piers and a 3-mile trail around the lake. The day-use fee is $5 per vehicle or $2 per person (USFS).
It's also where the horse trails start. See our Cedar Lake Oklahoma trail riding post.
Sardis Lake: big bass and open water
Sardis Lake sits five miles north of Clayton along OK-2, at the western tip of the Ouachita Mountains. The Corps says it covers 14,360 acres with 117 miles of shoreline. It has three campgrounds with hookups, showers, a swim beach and fishing docks. The Corps adds that Sardis "is known for producing several of Oklahoma's largest bass," along with crappie, catfish and walleye. From the ranch, it's 38 miles to the nearest shore.
Smaller water worth knowing
- Post Mountain Lake (12 mi): a 15-acre fishing lake on top of Post Mountain in the Indian Nations National Scenic and Wildlife Area, about 41,000 acres of national forest wildlife habitat.
- Kiamichi River near Talihina (22 mi): a scenic Ouachita river for wading and a cool-off when the lakes feel crowded.
- The ranch pond (0 mi): stocked with bass and right out the back door. Bring a rod and a lawn chair.
Summer tips for southeast Oklahoma lakes
- Beat the heat. Get on the water at first light and come back in by early afternoon.
- Check water quality before you swim. Oklahoma posts advisories for blue-green algae at some lakes in hot weather.
- Life jackets. Put kids in one on the boat and at the beach, and check the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lake Patrol boating rules for current requirements.
- Watch the sky. Summer storms build fast over the mountains. Get off the water when you hear thunder.
- Fishing license. Anyone required to have one needs an Oklahoma license, and limits should be checked in the current ODWC fishing regulations.
